Hi! I'm Kip and I have finally decided to create and maintain a photography blog. I'm not quite ready to commit to a photo a day, but I am willing to document my photographic journeys here on the blog.
First Stop....Carpinteria!
Carpinteria (Carp) is a beach town nestled between the coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It is a popular destination among California natives and tourists alike.
The city's name, Carpinteria, was derived from the Spanish word for carpentry shop because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing canoe-building enterprise. This was due to availability of naturally occurring surface tar which was used to seal their canoes. In fact asphalt mining was one of the businesses that thrived in Carp for many years and tar continues to seep even today.
Carpinteria Beach is known for its gentle slope and good surfing waves. There is a seal rookery where seals and sea lions (and their pups) can be seen on the beach and in the ocean throughout the year, but primarily in December through May. This is a protected area with guided viewing with the local docents. During low tide there are many tidepools containing starfish, sea anemones, crabs and other marine life.

Many folks come to Carpinteria to hike, camp, site-see, surf and most of all to enjoy the beautiful California coast - so come experience Carpinteria! Shop in the downtown area, walk along the bluffs, visit the seal rookery - maybe even try your hand at surfing - you won't be disappointed! Oh and please stay for the amazing sunset...you wouldn't want to miss the most gorgeous sunsets on the west coast!!!
